iOS 4.0 issue – important

June 21st, 2010

Apple has notified us that there is a crashing issue (and a no-sound issue) with bleep!BOX under iOS 4.0 – we are working hard to get this resolved as soon as possible. Until then, I would recommend not upgrading your phone to iOS 4.0 just yet, if using bleep!BOX is important to you.

Update 6/26:
We are still working hard to resolve these issues – we have a fix for the no-sound issue and are working out some OpenGL related issues on specific devices. I am hopeful that we will be able to submit a new update sometime this coming week. For now, stick to bleep!BOX on iOS 3.2 (iPad) or 3.1.3.

1.3.0 in Review

June 14th, 2010

Just a quick note to say that 1.3.0 is in the review process. It has been rejected once (legitimately), but those issues have now been fixed and hopefully it will be approved this time. App approval times seem to be averaging about 4 days.  I’m very excited to see this version go out the door, since it adds a lot of new requested features and addresses many bugs too. The full list of features will be posted as soon as it’s released.

New version

May 24th, 2010

Work is wrapping up on the new version which I’ve been teasing for a while now. I fixed up a couple critical bugs this weekend and made some improvements to the loading sequence. So the app should start up faster and hopefully this will fix any issues people are having launching the app (I had only one report of problems).

The next version will support the Intua ‘General Pasteboard’ method for copying and pasting audio to other apps. Also, Sonoma has released version 1.1 of their API which supports the General Pasteboard. So, soon you’ll be able to paste into all of those apps, such as FourTrack and Looptastic (as soon as all developers upgrade to 1.1). I’m very excited about this. Combined with the multitasking stuff coming in OS4.0, it will be very easy to use a variety of different apps to generate audio and compose music on the iPhone / iPad. Now we just need someone to figure out how to hack the Camera Kit to do MIDI output ;)

Some new tracks up on SoundCloud

May 24th, 2010

I’ve been posting some tracks to SoundCloud using bleep!BOX’s upcoming ‘upload to SoundCloud’ feature. You can check them out here or individually:

http://soundcloud.com/bleep-box/kfuc-120-wav
http://soundcloud.com/bleep-box/deciembre-130-wav-1
http://soundcloud.com/bleep-box/docrobot-109-wav
http://soundcloud.com/bleep-box/hypno-107-wav
http://soundcloud.com/bleep-box/bleep-dnb2

You can download the original .WAV files for most of these, so feel free to use the tracks in your own music.

I’m happy to say that SoundCloud.com now works pretty well on the iPad/iPhone. Hope they figure out a way to make the widgets work too.

bleep!BOX gets prettier on the iPad

May 3rd, 2010

While we have been hard at work adding new features, we have also been thinking how to best make use of all this great new screen real-estate on the iPad, while still keeping our iPhone and iPod touch users happy. To that end, we have gone through and adjusted every page in bleep!BOX to use the full screen space available. No more ‘empty’ looking pages. Plus, we’ve added the one feature that will make bleep!BOX respected in the pantheon of ‘Professional’ music applications. You guessed it – BRUSHED ALUMINUM. Awwww yeah!!!

And yes, for you haters of white space, there is still some white space on the sequencer page. Why you might ask? Well maybe, JUST MAYBE some amazing new things will get added there someday. YOU JUST NEVER KNOW!!

Great review

April 12th, 2010

bleep!BOX has been getting some nice reviews in the app store. Here’s one I wanted to share:

This is the first review I’ve ever felt compelled to write…

First of all, WOW! The developer did such a fantastic job on this app! There are so many great and intuitive features packed into bleep!BOX that make it an entirely new experience for this electronic musician of 15 years who has seen and heard it all, and the sound quality is simply superb!

I downloaded this after getting both the Korg app and Mini-Synth Pro, and bleep!BOX is the winner hands down, for all around design, programmability, playability, and sound quality. The sounds are all synthesized as you go, no samples, and all ten voices have been thoughtfully designed and are true to their analog counterparts. In just a couple days, this has become my new favorite app of all the music software loaded on both my iPhone and new iPad.

Don’t make the mistake I did of thinking that because it has a whimsical name that it’s not a deadly serious production tool with tons of potential. Exporting recordings via wi-fi .wav files is awesome, and I am floored by the punchy full frequency sound that this app delivers, which is by the far the important criteria for me personally.

So keep an eye out for my existing hardware synthesizers for sale on eBay in the coming weeks, as it turns out a $9.99 app on my $600 iPad has just replaced a couple thousand dollars in bulky gear, letting me freely create music in a fraction of the time and always take my production tool with me. Also, my hardware synths don’t email or surf the web! :)

I have a feeling that as updates come down the pipe, bleep!BOX is only gonna get better and better, but one thing is certain, the future is truly NOW!

Thanks for the kind words!
